My adventure at the silk market
I love Beijing but I am now ready to go back to work. I already saw the better part of the city so I decided to go buy some souvenirs. The best shops are in the silk market.
The easiest way to go there is to ride the subway. Beijing has a fantastic subway system and it is very cheap. I only paid 2 RMB for a ticket. (almost $0.40 US) The only problem is that the trains are always full. It doesn't matter when you ride. It is always the same. (See the photo, left) The subway is also easy to find. All the stations have an outside marker like on the right. You can recognize it by the "D" inside the circle.
When I arrived at the market, I was surprised by the many shopkeepers. They sell EVERYTHING! Watches, clothes, furniture, toys, etc... But, in China, you can't go shopping like in other countries. First, you have to bargain for everything. I don't understand Chinese well so I used a calculator to show the price I wanted to pay. This took a lot of time, but I bought my souvenirs for half the first price that the shopkeeper asked for. I am very proud! Second, the shopkeepers are very aggressive. They always ask for a sale. Usually, you hear "Mista Mista. You want T-shirt?" Sometimes, they put the sale items in my hands so I can't ignore them. I found that if I spoke with them in Esperanto, they didn't understand and they forgot about me. (This is good advice for anyone who visits Beijing and goes shopping!) |
